I got some of these from some place called Hondo Garage. Not a plug, never heard of them, but they did fine by me. They're aluminum not steel, you can twist them in mid-rail (still a PITA to get them in, but you don't have to go all the way to the ends) and they're 5/16" thread, which is still overkill for the strength of the rail anyway.
